Michigan 4-H News

One way to use a llama is to enrich the lives of others through 4H.  The Hummers are twenty youth between the ages of 11-17 who come to the farm and work with the llamas. They adopt one or two llamas as their 4H project. They are responsible for training the animal for fair, weekly farm chores including manure cleanup, helping to put up hay and other activities related to the care of the animals.

Events include a 4H llama show in Lansing, the Ludington Llama Classic, Holiday parades in town (4th of July, Scottville Harvest Festival, Spirit of the Season, Scottville), visits to local retirement homes, Llamas at the Library night, participation in the Western Michigan Fair, a wilderness camping adventure with the llamas at the Ludington State Park, as well as some day hikes at the State Park.

Craft projects will include making dry felted llamas from their llama's fiber, making ponchos, matching pads, lead ropes and tassles for their llamas, locker hooking with llama fibre, beaded llama jewelry, papier mache llamas, llama photography and educational posters.

The Hummers meet every Saturday,  March - December.

We have developed a comprehensive set of materials to use with 4H youth. This includes resource materials, word searches, llama evaluations and project checklists. Available for $10 per copy.

Michigan 4-H Llama Groups

Llama Clubs have their own 4H code. It is GBN.
Be sure to use it when you sign up your kids.

Be sure that your Extension Office is up to date and registers
your group under this new code
. It will help track the number
of llama clubs and kids.  This impacts many areas of 4H
 including curriculum development.

The 2004 data for MI shows approximately 200 youth
registered as participating in  a youth llama project.
